This book is based on the diaries kept by Colonel R.G.Pine-Coffin DSO MC throughout the 1939-45 war in Europe.
The diary covers early parachute training through D-Day, incorporating Pegasus Bridge and Horsa Bridge on to 4th September 1944 from which the book takes its title.
"The date is June 5th-6th just after midnight and it is the turn of the The 7th (Light Infantry) Parachute Battalion to descend into unknown territory. To defend or seize the bridges over the Caen Canal. The future of the world lay in their hands. If they failed it was likely that the whole of the "D" Day landing operations would also fail."
